First, let’s find out if your child actually has lice.

How to check:

  • Put your child under a bright light, part the hair and watch for movement.
  • Using a comb, start at the scalp and work your way to the end of the hair. Look for lice and eggs, lock by lock. Examine and wipe the comb on a paper towel after each stroke.
  • It’s hard to see the lice as they move quickly when exposed to light. But the lice eggs (nits) can’t move and are glued to the hair shaft.

Lice color, size and shape:

  • Recently laid eggs are nearly transparent; nits may be brown, yellow or white. They’re about the size of a poppy seed and often look like dandruff that can’t be easily removed on the hair shaft right near the scalp.
  • Adult lice (including super lice) are light brown and about the size of a sesame seed.
